Born 1983 on the only 10 squarekilometres small Kokomo Island, Ali Karibik grew up in a small village with a centuries old tradition of building unique drums from sea turtle shells and the tanned skin of tiny snakes (Leptotyphlops bilineata). After moving to Kingston at the age of nine he found what seemed to him “a big room full of noise making toys” owned by a guy called Osbourne during one of his strolls through the big city. This discovery sparked the boys interest and imagination and he started building simple electronic instruments with the fine ears and knowledge he inherited from his hometown. At the age of 15 his family moved to Paris where he found out about the Club Archipel, a night club mostly attended by intellectual and colonialisme-romantic parisienne. There he was able to listen to a great variety of what europeans considered as exotic music for the first time in his life. He started playing as a drummer in a garage rock band with some of his school mates called “Du Bois”. It was at this time where he found out about the vivid european electronic music scene, with releases from Basic Channel being the most influental at this time. Combining his roots and these influences, Karibik started producing music and djing with a variety of collaborators. He currently lives in the ancient music capital of the world, Vienna/Austria.
